Mrs. Sarah Janette Auston Averett of Geneva, Alabama passed away May 4, 2022 at the young age of 97.


Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 7, 2022 in the chapel of Warren Holloway Ward Funeral home with Rev. Steve Skidmore officiating.  Burial will follow in Meadowlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home directing. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. until service time.


Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Coffee Springs Senior Citizen’s Center.


Mrs. Averett was born September 21, 1924 to the late James Elbert and Vergie Kinsaul Auston. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially working in her flower beds, vegetable gardening, raking leaves and picking up pecans. She, along with her husband, were farmers who knew what it meant to “put in a hard day’s work”. Often, you would find her cleaning up around the house, yard and even the barn. She believed in keeping a place tidy. Above all else, her strong faith and unconditional love will be what she is most fondly remembered for.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Edwin Averett, one grandson, Warren Tate Sutherland; five sisters, Codie Windham, Carrie Griffin, Novie Milcarz, Bobbie Williams and Agnes Griffin; three brothers, Warren, Cullen and Wyatt Auston.


Mrs. Averett is survived by one son, Eddie Averett (Dawn) of Chancellor, AL; two granddaughters, Ashley Powell (Robin) of Chancellor, AL and Mallory Mixon (Phillip) of Geneva, AL; six great-grandchildren, Auston Walden, Ashley, Emily, and Ethan Powell, Ava and Isla Mixon; and one brother, Wayne Auston of Springfield, MO; one brother-in-law, Roscoe Byrd of Enterprise, AL; one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Pate (Wayne) of Birmingham, AL, and a number of special nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.


Serving as pallbearers will be Phillip Mixon, Robin Powell, Auston Walden, Steve Bowdoin, Jeff Howell and Mark Jones.
