Shirley Louise Hayes, a beloved family matriarch and lifelong resident of Geneva passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at Wiregrass Nursing Home where she had resided for the past two and a half years.  She was 85. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, in the chapel of Pittman Funeral Home in Geneva with Rev. Chase Childs and Mr. Zachary Hayes, officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Pittman Funeral Home of Geneva, directing. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Tuesday, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Mrs. Hayes was born in Geneva County on September 16, 1938, to the late D. Thomas and Arrie Thomas.  She was preceded in death by her parents, and all her siblings, three brothers and three sisters.  She attended Geneva City Schools and was later employed by Colonial Products in Geneva for many years.  She was a member of Maple Avenue Baptist Church.

Known for her friendly and loving nature, she loved her family especially her two sons, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.  She was the devoted wife of David Carnley Hayes of Geneva; mother of two sons, David Hayes (Tywanna) of Kinston and Ricky Hayes (Lisa) of Geneva; cherished grandmother of six grandchildren who she called her Sugar Lumps, Brooke Hayes, Mollie Adkison (Anthony), Zachary Hayes (Haley), Halie White (Aaron), Justin Hayes (Ashton), and Brandon Hayes; proud great-grandmother to seven great-grandchildren.  In her free time, she loved to cook and was known for her multi-layered chocolate cake at Christmas, fishing at Lake Eufaula, and working with her flowers.  Her passing leaves a deep void, but we can rejoice in knowing that she is resting in the arms of the angels.

Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Justin, Zachary, and Brandon; great-grandsons-in-law, Anthony Adkison and Aaron White; and great-grandson, Patrick Barber.  Serving as honorary pallbearers will be great-grandsons, Judson and Walker Hayes.  The family of Shirley Louise Hayes wants to thank Dr. John Simmons, Sr. and Jr.; the staff of Wiregrass Nursing Home; and Gentiva Hospice of Enterprise for the wonderful care shown to our mother.  The family will be at the home of Ricky and Lisa Hayes, 1593 McDougald St. Geneva, AL 36340.
