HEADLAND…Shirley Smothers Welch, a resident of Headland, passed away Thursday morning, October 21, 2021, at her home. She was 82.

   Graveside services will be held at 4:00 P.M. Sunday, October 24, 2021, in the Concord Baptist Cemetery with Pastor Scott Wyatt and Joseph Smith officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. Social distancing and mask guidelines will be observed.

   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Concord Baptist Church, c/o Janara Parrish 1350 County Road 14, Newville, AL 36353.

   Shirley Welch was born and reared in Henry County, near Headland, daughter of the late Henry Wade Smothers and Vera Myrtle Green Smothers. She retired from Michelin. In earlier years, she was employed in the lunch room of the Headland Primary School. Shirley was a member of the Concord Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth W. Welch, a son, Shane Welch, her sisters, Mathell Sellers and Wynodell Harris, and her brothers, George Smothers and Wayne Smothers.

   Surviving relatives include her daughter, Renae Walker (David), and two sons, Keith Welch and Mark Welch, all of Headland; a sister-in-law, Marie Norton Smothers, Abbeville; four grandchildren, Kelly Welch (Laura), Wesley Welch (Christy), Lauren Welch and Jaycie Walker; seven great-grandchildren, Caleb, Hunter, Olivia, Zoey, Cash, Greyson and Baylie; several nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law, Joy Smith and Mavis Welch.
