Starla Kay Smith Perez, a resident of Dothan, passed away Monday, December 23, 2019 at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 am, Friday, December 27, 2019, at Glover Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jerry Grandstaff officiating and Glover Funeral Home directing.  Visitation will be at 10:00 am until 11:15 am, prior to the service on Friday, December 27, 2019, at Glover Funeral Home Chapel.  Flowers will be accepted.

Starla was born March 15, 1955 in Dothan, Alabama to Maxie and Zadie Margaret DeVane Smith and lived all of life in Houston County. She was a 1973 graduate of Dothan High School. She later graduated from Troy State Dothan with a Bachelor’s in Biology and later earned her Master’s in Biology and her Masters in Art Education at Troy State.

Starla was employed with the Henry County School System for eight years and with the Houston County School system for seven years. She taught at Wallace College for two years and has been an Adjunct Professor for eight years at Bainbridge College now Abraham-Baldwin College. Starla was a lifelong member of Southside Baptist Church.

She is predeceased by her father, Maxie Smith.

She is survived by her husband of twenty-four years, Aaron Perez of Dothan; two step-children, Jeff Perez of Albany, GA, Charmagne Gordon (Mark) of Deltona, FL; her mother, Zadie Margaret Smith of Dothan; three brothers, Dan Smith (Mary Margaret) of Kennesaw, GA, Sam Smith (Alisa) of Orlando, FL, Phillip Smith (Cindy) of Webb; a sister, Margaret Ann Smith Wyatt (Joe) of Webb, AL; four grandchildren, Micah Perez, Carmen Perez, Drake Gordon, and Amber Robinson; a great grandchild, Ha-leigha Robinson; a cousin and lifelong friend, Paula Sue Armstrong (Harold) of Haleburg, AL; several nieces and nephews also survive.
