Steve J. “Bassin” Bynum of Geneva, Al. passed away after a brief illness, at his home on November 28, 2019. Steve was 70 years old.

Steve was born on September 11, 1949 to James Jackson (Jack), and Lillie (Doll) Bynum. He grew up in Geneva, Al. where he enjoyed outdoor sports, especially fishing with his Dad. He started working at a young age, riding his bike delivering a newspaper route, and in High School, he worked with the T&I Program, where he worked at the American Bank, becoming a loan officer. He was instrumental in the beginnings of an aluminum products company, which after he left later became Outdoor Aluminum. His love of the outdoors, fishing and hunting became his passion. He turned his entrepreneurial spirit to selling boats, and later, manufacturing and customizing. You see his first aluminum boat, Team Weldbilt, in the water still today. His dream grew to the design of an aluminum pontoon. After two hip replacements, he wanted a craft that would be stable and easy to board on and off, for shallow fishing. This pontoon became Custombilt Pondtoons and has been selling all over the United States. Steve’s love of the outdoors was passed on to his two sons early in life, and today, they are continuing their Dad’s dream and passion by continuing his business, Custombilt Pondtoons.

In 2001, Steve finally “caught” and married Gail Varney from Enterprise, Al. a teacher at EHS. Together, they enjoyed the outdoor life, spending time at the lake or beach, with friends and family. Wherever there was water, even the pool at home, there was Steve. Steve and Gail enjoyed delivering sold pondtoons to his customers. He loved seeing where they would be in the water, developing many personal friendships over the years with his customers. He and Gail traveled in October to Maine to stay and visit with a couple that recently purchased a pontoon.

Steve loved living, and lived a passionate, fun-filled life with many friends and family. Many “Steve stories” have been shared over and over at friend, family, or party gatherings. They won’t stop, because to him, life was to be celebrated, especially in the God-given beautiful outdoors.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents, James Jackson (Jack) Bynum and Lillie (Doll) Bynum. He is survived by his wife, Gail V. Bynum: sons, Steve (Christi) Bynum Jr., and Brad (Jenny) Bynum, one sister, Pat (Frankie) Lindsey, all of Geneva; one step-daughter, Jennifer (Calvin) Gorriaran of Sugarland, Texas. Steve has six grandchildren, Garret and Jackson Bynum (Steve Jr.), and Brook and Brody Bynum (Brad), all of Geneva; and Aven and Maya Gorriaran from Texas (Gail’s daughter, Jennifer).

Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Geneva, on December 1, 2019 with Pastor Tony Rosetta officiating. The family will receive friends and family at the church on Dec. 1, beginning at 12:30 p.m. and will continue until 2:00 p.m. service time. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Garden Cemetery, with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home directing. Flowers are from Ivywood florist in Enterprise, Al. If preferred, donations may be made in Steve “Bassin” Bynum’s memory to the Fowler Park for a “River View” Bench seating area. C/O State Bank P.O. Box 70 Geneva,Al 36340 Att; Terri Hutto
