Susan Dunlap West, 64, died as a result of COVID-19 at Enterprise Medical Center in Enterprise, Alabama on February 13, 2021.


She was born in Omaha, Nebraska February 25, 1956, to Col. (retired) Glen R. and Christine Dunlap. Susan was graduated from Bellevue High School in Bellevue, Nebraska in 1974, earned her Associate of Science degree from George C. Wallace State Community College in 1999, a Bachelor of Science degree from Troy University in 2004, and attained a longtime goal, a Master of Science degree in Counseling and Psychology in 2012. Academic standing won her membership in Gamma Beta Phi Society and Chi Sigma Iota.


Susan is survived by her daughters Stephanie Marie West of Streamwood, Illinois, and Heather Lyn West of Arvada, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Glen (Randy) Dunlap Jr. (Kate).


Susan was devoted to education. She began her career as an early childhood teacher in the Chicago area. In 1998, she relocated to Ozark, Alabama and served as a teacher’s aide at Ellis D. Parker Elementary School in Fort Rucker, Alabama, from which she retired in 2018. She had a passion for genealogy research and gathered records of her family’s lineage from the United States, Scotland, Ireland, and England. Susan was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Ozark.  She will be missed by her family, many dear friends and her companion, Don Martens of Pensacola Florida.


A memorial will be held at First United Methodist Church of Ozark, 167 E Broad St, Ozark, AL 36360 on February 23, 2021 at 5:30pm. Masks will be required and social distancing observed. Susan will be interred at the Dunlap family plot in Texas at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First United Methodist Church of Ozark (www.firstozark.org), Ellis D. Parker Elementary School PTO (checks can be addressed to Parker PTO and sent to Parker PTO, Post Office Box 620279, Fort Rucker, AL 36362), or a charity of one’s choice.
