Obituary: Travis L. Whittaker Jr. 


Travis L. “Max” Whittaker, of New Brockton, Alabama passed away Sunday, February 19, 2023. He was 58.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kerry Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in the New Brockton City Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory of Enterprise directing.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service beginning at 12:30 pm and continuing until service time.

Max was born February 21, 1964 in Alabama to Travis L. and Betty J. Whittaker. He was preceded in death by one brother-in-law Towsend E. “Bud” Boyd. A New Brockton native, Whittaker played football for Wiregrass Hall of Fame coach Leavy Boutwell while in high school at New Brockton. He attended college at Enterprise State Community College and Troy University before beginning his teaching/coaching career at Goshen High School in 1990. After one year there, he moved to the Enterprise City Schools and was head football coach at Dauphin Junior High School as well as an assistant football coach at Enterprise High School from 1991-2002.

He then became head football coach at Geneva County. He was also the school athletic director.  In 2006, he became the principal at Slocomb High School, a job he held for four years before moving to a supervisor’s position with the Geneva County Board of Education. After five years, he returned as a principal, doing so at Geneva County High School. He spent a total of 14 years in Hartford before moving to Florala in 2016. He was the principal of Florala High School for 7 years. His love for the students, faculty, and community of Florala was the highlight of his professional career.

“Our concern and prayers go out to Mr. Whittaker’s family, and the students and teachers at Florala High School,” said AHSAA Executive Director Alvin  Briggs. “We pray God’s love will sustain them during this difficult time.” Briggs added, “His entire family are educators, and his life was dedicated to that mission. He was so proud of the many successes he has witnessed while serving as principal at Florala. His positive impact on the young people of Florala and across this state will be long-lasting.”

Survivors include his wife of 33 years Tracy Whittaker, two sons, Sawyer Whittaker (Bethany) of Enterprise, Grady Whittaker, Scout Whittaker, both of New Brockton; parents, Travis & Betty Whittaker; one sister, Dana Whittaker Boyd; one grandchild, Lucy Whittaker; one nephew and three nieces Whit Cotter, Emma Lako, Anna Lako, Lilly Lako.

In lieu of flowers contribution may be made to Florala High School.

Serving as Pallbearers will be Jason Stump, Stevens Whitaker, Whit Cotter, Steve Lako, David Helms, Ricky Sipper.

Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be  Kevin Killingsworth, Leavy Boutwell, Kevin Lesuer, Keith Simmons.
