ABBEVILLE. . .Voncile Luker Strickland, a resident of Abbeville, died Tuesday night, August 2, 2022, at her home. She was 87.


   Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 6, 2022, in the Old Zion Baptist Church with Pastor Matthew Quincey and Pastor Caleb Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Saturday in the church sanctuary. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.


   Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Old Zion Baptist Church, c/o John R. Starling, 480 County Road 36, Shorterville, AL 36373.


   Mrs. Strickland was born in Needham, Alabama, daughter of the late James Phillip Luker and Minnie Lee Broadhead Luker. She was raised in Needham and Camden, Alabama by her grandparents, Samuel Dow B. Luker and Samomos Ann Fesdonia Singleton Luker. She lived in Henry County and the Wills Crossroads Community most of her adult lifetime. Mrs Strickland was an active member of the Old Zion Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and was active in the Women’s Missionary Union of the Judson Baptist Association. She and her late husband, Thomas Hugh Strickland, formerly owned and operated Hugh’s Super Saver for fifty years. Mrs. Strickland was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, Lisa Strickland Turner, sons in law, Lee Turner, Kevin Parmer and John Turner, a sister, Joyce Etters, and four brothers, Sam Luker, Aaron Luker, Bob Luker and Joe Luker.


   Surviving relatives include two daughters, Teresa Phillips (Chris), and Tanja Parmer, all of Abbeville; a step-daughter, Karen Turner, Leesburg, FL; a son, Dale Strickland (June), Prattville; sisters-in-law, Jeanette Moody, Juanita Perez and Doris Luker; grandchildren, Jeremy Turner (Shannon), Ashley Turner, Matt Strickland (Cindy), Daniel Strickland (Sara), Caleb Strickland (Katie), Brian Phillips, Brooke Owens (Chris), Brittany Johnson (Dillon), Leanne Ragland (Braxton), Jacob Smith (Olivia), Jacklyn Hughes (Brian), and Johnathon Smith (Cassandra), twenty-five great-grandchilden; and one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.


   Serving as active pallbearers will be her grandsons and a great-grandson, Dylan Strickland.


   The family would like to express their appreciation to Kindred Hospice, and her caretakers, Bettye Graham, Rebecca Murry, Ruth Lawrence and Melinda Harris for the loving care and kindness shown to Mrs. Strickland during her illness.
