WALTER  BRITT  HOWERTON

 

ABBEVILLE. . .Walter Britt Howerton, a resident of County Road 93, Abbeville, died Friday morning, March 23, 2012, in the Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Facility. He  was 80.

 

            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, March 26, 2012, in the Judson Baptist Church with Reverend Randy Stokes and Reverend Gerald Ross officiating. Graveside services, with full military honors, will follow in the Ebenezer Cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 P. M. Sunday at the mortuary in Abbeville.

 

            Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the God’s Way Baptist Church, c/o Sharon Doss, 1013 Five Mile Road, Eufaula, AL. 36027.

 

            Mr. Howerton was a native of the Wesley community of Henry County, son of the late Floyd Howerton and Nellie Barron Howerton. He served his country in the U. S. Army and also the U. S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired from the Air Force in 1972 with rank of Staff Sergeant and returned to Henry County.  After his retirement from the military, Mr. Howerton was self employed as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the Judson Baptist Church and in recent years, attended God’s Way Baptist Church, near Eufaula. Mr. Howerton was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Hartzog Howerton, and two brothers, Jerry Wayne Howerton and Foy Howerton.

 

            Surviving relatives include a daughter, Ida Fay Ward and husband, Doug, Artemas, PA; a son, James Wally Howerton and wife, Teresa, Abbeville; two grandchildren, Brittany Ann Howerton and Catherine Madison Howerton; two sisters, Barbara Mathis and husband, Don, Cuthbert, GA; Patricia Walker and husband, Jerry, Abbeville; two brothers, John F. Howerton and wife, Illia, Cainsville, MO; William L. Howerton and wife, Yvonne, Eufaula; a sister-in-law, Edwina Howerton, Abbeville; a special friend, Mary Stokes, Ft. Gaines; several nieces and nephews.
