HEADLAND…Wanda Hodges Bird-Steinhauer, a resident of Headland, died Saturday evening, August 8, 2020, at her residence. She was 76.


     Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 11, 2020, in Gardens of Memory with Dr. Cecil M. Sanders, Jr., officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 10:00 until 10:45 A.M. at the mortuary. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of the arrangements. Social distancing and mask guidelines will be followed.


     In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Headland “Bridge to Tomorrow” Building Fund, 301 East Church Street, Headland, AL 36345.


     Wanda was born in Dothan, daughter of the late Sterling Glenwood Hodges and Ollie B. Hicks Hodges. She was a 1961 graduate of Dothan High School. She earned a degree in Secondary Education from Troy University and also earned a secondary degree in Math from Auburn University. She taught high school in Alexander City, Marianna, FL, and Columbus, GA. While a resident of Marianna, she started a career in banking with Citizens Bank and later was employed by Five Star Credit Union in Dothan and Peoples Bank in Headland. In later years, Wanda was actively involved with the Headland Area Chamber of Commerce and was a member of First Baptist Church of Headland. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Willis Terry Bird, and 2 sisters, Glenda Hodges Morris and Judy Hodges Armstrong.


     Surviving relatives include her husband Frank Steinhauer of Headland; her daughter, Bonnie Melinda Bird Simmons (Don) of Troy; a brother, William Earl Hodges (Bettie) of Savannah, GA; 4 grandchildren, Dalton Simmons (Caroline), Kiegan Simmons, Kendall Simmons and Kinsley Simmons; 2 step-daughters, Wendy Ellis (JD) of Limrick, PA, and Patti Benjamin of Dothan; a step-son, Ed Benjamin of Springfield, TN; 6 step-grandchildren, 6 great-step-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
