Bill, born in Cairo, GA, was the son of the late William Archie Northington, Sr. and Wilba Frances Garner Northington. Growing up in Montgomery, AL, he graduated from Sidney Lanier High School and 4 years later, graduated from Auburn University with a BA Degree in Business Administration in 1961. While at Auburn, he was in the Naval ROTC Scholarship Program.

After graduation from Auburn, Bill married Winnie Faye Smith, and they remained happily married for almost 62 years. He was commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy and served his country approximately 4 years. During his Navy days in 1962, his first child, Dana, was born. In 1965, Bill received an honorable discharge from the Navy as a Lieutenant Junior Grade. After service in the Navy, Bill became a real estate appraiser in Montgomery, AL. In 1968, his second child, Carey, was born and in 1970 his third child, Stephen, was born.

In 1972, Bill and his family moved to Atlanta, GA to become Chief Appraiser with Atlanta Federal Savings and Loan, which later became Georgia Federal Bank, and remained with the Bank for over 20 years. Also in 1972, Bill was professionally designated as a MAI (Member Appraisal Institute) within the organization of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers. He retained this professional designation throughout his appraisal career. Bill was active in the Atlanta Chapter of the Organization and served in many official capacities, including President and member of the Board of Directors. He eventually retired from Georgia Federal Bank, private practice, and as a MAI.

Bill will be remembered most by his family and friends as someone who loved his family, his God, was honest, hard-working, disciplined, principled and who came home every night. He loved the Navy, his country, playing tennis, the outdoors and churches where he served; he was a “Southern Gentleman”; he especially enjoyed fishing and deer hunting on his property in Abbeville, AL. Bill also valued spending time with his family whether it was on an annual vacation to Hilton Head Island, SC or boating on Allatoona Lake in Georgia.

Bill was active in a number of Baptist churches and was last most active at Kennesaw First Baptist Church, Kennesaw, GA. Bill has been on the Deacon board, finance committee, and faithfully taught Sunday School in the Baptist Church for approximately 45 years.
