William F. “Bill” Phillips


 


Captain William F. “Bill” Phillips (USAF Retired) 92, passed away July 24, 2012 at Wesley Manor.


 


A celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2012 at Wesley Manor Chapel, 718 Honeysuckle Road, with Dr. Johnny Fain officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Monday in the Chapel at Wesley Manor. At other times the family will be at the home of his nephew Bill (Mary) Hickman in Ashford.


 


Bill was born and raised in Selkirk, NY. He joined the army in 1941 and was stationed at Eglin Field, FL. While there, he met and married Edna Ruth Wright. In World War II, he served with the forces in China Burma India (CBI) as a radio engineer. After the war, he served his country for 21 years in the USAF. He received the Bronze Star, the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, and other honors for distinguished military service. He retired in 1965 at Randolph AFB, Texas, and spent the next 23 years teaching in the Texas Public School System. He served on the town council in Universal City, Texas, and was Sec-Treasure of the Cibilo Creek Water Authority. Captain Phillips is a Master Mason and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. He is a lifetime member of Gideon’s International. He was a member of First Baptist Church, San Antonio, Texas, for 38 years and served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.


 


The Phillips moved to Baptist Village in Dothan in 2000 and immediately joined First Baptist Church. He was actively involved in community missions and the jail ministry. Bill was a loving and giving person and took great delight in collecting state quarters and giving them to friends and neighbors. He was affectionately known as, “the Quarter Man” and hundreds of people have been the recipient of his generosity.


 


He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Ruth; his parents; three brothers, Henry, Fred and Ernest, all of New York State; and a daughter-in-law, Donna Phillips of Colorado Springs, CO.


 


He is survived by his two sons, Mike Phillips, San Diego, CA and Carl Phillips, Aurora, CO; a granddaughter, Holly (Darrell) Phillips-Caldwell, Aurora, CO; two great-grandsons; sisters-in-law, Peg Phillips, Selkirk, NY and Sue Phillips, Albany NY; and a large number of nieces and nephews.
