WILLIAM  MARTIN  BARNES


 


SHORTERVILLE. . .William Martin (Billy) Barnes, a resident of County Road 28,  Shorterville, died Tuesday morning, June 26, 2012, at his home. He was 67.



            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, June 28, 2012, in the Union Free Will Baptist Church with Reverend Ray S. Reiley officiating. Burial will follow in the Adoniram Baptist Church Cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday  at the mortuary in Abbeville.  At other times the family will be at the home of Jeanette Barnes, 1920 County Road 127, Abbeville, AL 36373.



            Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Union Free Will Baptist Church, c/o Carol Johns, 206 Briarhill Road, Abbeville, AL. 36310 or to Alacare Hospice, 3379 West Main Street, Dothan, AL. 36305 or to the Adoniram Baptist Church, c/o Tina Barnes, 3475 County Road 71, Shorterville, AL. 36373.



            Billy Barnes was a lifelong resident of Henry County, son of the late Oris Hobson Barnes and Joyce Barnette Barnes. He was a 1957 graduate of Union School and a 1963 graduate of Abbeville High School where he was President of the 4-H Club and the Future Farmers of America. Billy was involved in farming and agriculture all his life. In earlier years, he owned and operated W & E Trucking, Billy Barnes Logging Company and Barnes Farms. In the early 1990’s, a partnership was formed with his son, Marty, as Barnes and Son Farms, a partnership which continues today with the addition of his grandson, David. Billy was a member of the American Agricultural Movement, the Henry County Cattlemen’s Association and the Henry County Democratic Committee. He formerly served as the assistant Fire Chief for the Shorterville Volunteer Fire Department and was awarded Firefighter of the Year in 2004. In November of 2006, Billy was sworn into office by Governor Bob Riley as Henry County Commissioner for District Two where he served the people with dignity and honor. Before his election as commissioner, he served as a poll supervisor for District 2. In 2008, Billy was awarded the Lifetime Farmer Award by the Abbeville Young Farmers Agricultural Education Association, Inc. In 2012, he received the Outstanding Service Award for all his service as a firefighter in the Shorterville Volunteer Fire Department.  He was one of the founding fathers of the Chattahoochee River Hunting Club and served as President for over 30 years.  Billy was an active member of the Union Free Will Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Gloria S. Barnes and his parents.



            Surviving relatives include his sons, Martin S. (Marty) Barnes, Shorterville; William H. (Bo) Barnes (Beth), Abbeville; and Timothy D. (AJ) Barnes (Katie), Shorterville; the mother of his three sons, Jeanette Holmes Barnes; four grandchildren, David Barnes, Jake Evans, Coleman Evans and Dakota Evans; a special friend, Pam Ludlam Murphy.



            Serving as active pallbearers will be Jerry Blount, Eddie James Johnson, Huey Jones, Tommy Searcy, Will Maddox, Wayne Money, Kyle Blount and Billy Lanford.  Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Shorterville Fire Department.
